Such has time flown by that I had to sense check whether it was our two or three year anniversary a couple of weeks ago when someone asked me how long Christie Yachts had been in business! It jolted me into reflecting on all that we have achieved and what we are looking forward to after three very busy and exciting years.

I am pleased to say that with the help of a brilliant and dynamic team, we have truly surpassed any expectations that I had back in 2021. We are punching significantly above our weight and have some exciting plans ahead.

BROKERAGE HIGHLIGHTS

From a standing start, our brokerage business got straight into action. Before we even had an office or website we had sold two boats, both off-market. This proved the depth of our network and trust-based relationships in the industry. Sourcing boats that are not publicly for sale, or even for sale at all when we approach the owners is something that we have already successfully achieved three times. Two of them we can’t mention because of confidentiality, but it is pleasing to have experienced clients coming to us as they recognise our ability to open the right doors and work discretely on their behalf.

The same is true of owners, four of which have contracted us in the last three months alone to sell their yachts discretely off-market. No publicity, no unnecessary attention. It’s often the best way to achieve a premium price. One we already have under offer, one we have three offers on the table which we are working through, while the other two will come to the market publicly with a full marketing campaign after the summer if unsold.

BUILDING THE TEAM

I have been very fortunate to have built a tight team of highly motivated, dynamic and hard working individuals without whom we would have never got to where we are now. We are building an energetic, enthusiastic and professional team who are enjoyable to work with, both as colleagues and for our clients. Yachting is a serious business, but should be fun at the same time - we will always seek to maintain that balance.

ALEXANDRA was delivered in 2018 by Wally Yachts and is one of the most impressive and distinctive sub-30m yachts on the water today. With 280sqm of interior living space and an oversized 59sqm sun deck, the spaces are incomparable to other yachts in this size range.

One of ALEXANDRA’s best features is the exceptional master stateroom on the lower deck aft with direct access to the swim platform through huge sliding glass doors. This stateroom is similar in size to those found on many 50-60m yachts. The swim platform was extended on this particular boat and features an oversized hydraulic transformer which lowers to below the waterline and is also used for boarding from the dock.

The initial interior design was completed by the highly acclaimed Alberto Pinto and refreshed by the current owners over the course of an extensive 6 month refit in 2021/2022. During this refit, the current owners, who have a superb eye for detail, made significant cosmetic and technical upgrades to the boat. Among the upgrades were CMC fin stabilizers which were retrofitted to enhance the stability of the yacht in addition to the existing gyro stabilizer so the yacht is incredibly stable both underway and at anchor.

Despite being 27.3m in overall length, ALEXANDRA has a waterline length under 24m meaning she is not affected by anchoring restrictions in the Mediterranean which is a huge bonus for owners who like to cruise in the South of France area.

In January, Superyacht News ran an article with my predictions for the market for the year ahead. I said at that time “Some lower quality and older yachts have been coming to the market with unrealistically high asking prices, perhaps reflecting the bull market that we enjoyed in 2021-early 2022. We are now starting to see a few price reductions for those sorts of yachts that we rarely saw back then… I see the price curve for those yachts gently falling this year. My main prediction however is that trade volumes will be down as a whole this year, due to restricted supply."

Looking at analysis we have had conducted by Vessels Value, an independent firm that tracks the market and uses algorithms and market data to value yachts, it appears that my prediction was indeed correct, and I see more of the same for the second half of the year. The market appears to be splitting into two - newer, high quality yachts, those are in very good condition or unique in some way and a second group of lower quality, older and mass production GRP boats.

The graph below clearly shows an upwards trend in price reductions since the last part of the year, while overall sales are down. The price reductions that we have seen have mostly been concentrated in that second group of lower quality, older and mass production GRP boats, while overall sales are down both due to slightly lower demand, but more notably a real dearth of supply. This is due to shipyard prices going up at inflation busting levels which in turn has resulted in owners being reluctant to sell their yachts – many are simply electing to keep their existing boats as upgrading to a new yacht is now often too costly in both financial and time terms.

The first half of this year has seen some very strong sales of some relatively new and larger North European yachts.  The prices achieved for these yachts have been impressive and reflect the very inflated prices now at shipyards. Buyers for high quality brokerage yachts are clearly noting that while they might be paying sellers a “premium”, it is still a big discount to the replacement cost of building an entirely new yacht, never mind the time saving of construction given that new build delivery times are still 3-4 years.

I predict that this “split” in the market will continue. There will certainly be some good deals for buyers later this year if they know where to look, while owners of high quality yachts or those that are special in some way can still probably hold a bit firmer. In 2021, it was undoubtedly a seller’s market for the first time since 2008. It seems that we now are starting to revert back to a normal state of play.

There is always healthy demand, but the supply is very limited, especially if you are looking for a top-quality Northern European build standard," he said.

LYNX Yachts is currently constructing a 24 metre full displacement motor yacht from its Adventure 24 series, which is available for sale ahead of its summer 2024 delivery.
